Fallston, MD (June 28, 2018) – Coming off the success last July of a united effort between 16 Maryland animal shelters when 2,395 homeless cats and kittens in Maryland found forever homes, the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) is once again teaming up with shelters across the state for the second annual Maryland 2,000: Saving Lives Across Maryland adoption event. Beginning July 1 through July 31, HSHC and 19 other shelters will be waiving adoption fees for all felines with the collective goal of finding homes for at least 2,000 unwanted cats and kittens.

“For some, summer is a time to slow down a bit, relax at the pool or head to the beach,” said Jen Swanson, HSHC executive director. “But for animal shelters in Maryland – and across the nation – there is nothing slow about summer. In fact, it’s one of the busiest times of the year when all of our shelters see a huge influx of kittens and cats born during the warm spring and summer months, known as Kitten Season.”

“Cats make terrific companions,” said Cat Kelly, HSHC’s shelter operations director. “Whether you’re looking for a lap cat or an active kitten, now is the perfect time to visit your local animal shelter and take advantage of the waived adoption fees. Plus, all adopters who take home a cat or kitten in July from HSHC, will receive a certificate for a free feline wellness exam at Cat Sense Feline Hospital, 332 South Main Street in Bel Air. There’s never been a better time to enlarge your family by four little feet!”

Presenting sponsor Cat Hospital At Towson (CHAT), and the following veterinary practices located throughout Maryland will also be offering free wellness exams to Maryland 2,000 adopters: A Cat Clinic, Arnold Veterinary Hospital, Brentwood Animal Hospital, Calvert Veterinary Center, Cat Sense Feline Hospital, Countryside Veterinary Clinic, Homeward Bound Mobile Vet, Metropolitan Cat Hospital, VCA Columbia Animal Hospital @ Hickory Ridge, VCA Lewis Animal Hospital and VCA Peachtree Animal Hospital.

Cats and kittens adopted from HSHC include a distemper vaccination (FVRCP for cats), a rabies vaccination (if the kitty is at least 3 months old), FeLV (feline leukemia) & FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) testing, de-wormer, flea & tick preventative, a microchip, a free sample of Hill’s Science Diet dry food, and a general exam. Regular adoption procedures still apply at all participating shelters during the Maryland 2,000. If the cat or kitten selected is not already spayed or neutered, a $50 deposit for a HASP (Harford Animal Sterilization Program) certificate is required. Adopters will be provided with a certificate for the surgical procedure and a list of participating veterinarians. The fee is refunded upon completion of the procedure within 60 days.
