Humane Society of Harford County Urgently Needs Foster Parents for Vulnerable Newborns

Fallston, MD (August 4, 2026) – Right now, the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) is overflowing with vulnerable kittens who need foster homes to survive. Many of these tiny babies arrive without their mother and require around-the-clock care that simply can’t be provided in a shelter environment.
Every day these kittens spend in the shelter increases their risk of illness, making foster homes more critical than ever. HSHC is urgently asking the community to open their hearts and homes to help these fragile lives get the healthy start they deserve.
“Newborn kittens without their mother are the single most at-risk animals in our shelter,” said Kelly Comerford, Clinic Manager at HSHC. “They need frequent feedings, constant monitoring, and a quiet place to grow. The sooner we can get them into foster homes, the better their chances of surviving and thriving. The best part is that we provide all the supplies, medical care, and training—you simply provide the love.”

While kitten fosters are the greatest need, HSHC is also looking for:
- Dog fosters who can help these pups learn home manners
- Medical fosters willing to care for pets recovering from illness or surgery
- Short-term and long-term foster families
- Adults age 18 or older with reliable transportation who can bring foster pets to scheduled check-ups and vaccine appointments
“Fostering doesn’t just save lives—it prepares pets for success,” Comerford added. “Living in a home helps them build confidence, learn routines, and become even more adoptable. Every foster family plays a vital role in helping pets find their forever homes.”
