Fallston, MD (March 21, 2016) – On Friday, March 25, after 70 years operating from a 100+ year old farmhouse, the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) is closing its doors and will re-emerge on Monday, March 28 in a new, 19,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility at 2208 Connolly Road in Fallston. Before shuttering the current facility forever, HSHC is hosting an Empty Our Shelter mega adoption event beginning today through Friday, March 25 and will waive the adoption fees for animals 7 months and over.
“There’s just no place like home,” says Cat Kelly, shelter operations director at HSHC. “It’s so exciting to be moving into our new building and we want our animals to experience that same joy this week by moving into new homes of their own.”
HSHC will be open from 11am until 6pm today through Friday, March 25, and interested adopters can view the animals’ photos and biographies by clicking here. As part of the adoption process, families should be prepared to bring their resident dog(s) for a “meet and greet” if they are considering adopting another dog.
HSHC will be closed for adoptions on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27, as we move into our new facility.
The waived adoption fees for the Empty Our Shelter week will also apply to animals at HSHC’s satellite adoption centers:

All animals adopted from HSHC receive:
- a rabies vaccination (if the animal is at least 3 months old);
- distemper vaccination (DHPP for dogs/FVCRP for cats);
- FeLV (feline leukemia) & FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) testing (cats only);
- canine influenza vaccination;
- canine kennel cough vaccination;
- de-wormer;
- flea & tick preventative;
- a microchip for identification purposes; and
- a general health exam.
There is an additional $50 deposit for a HASP (Harford Animal Sterilization Program) certificate so the animal can be spayed or neutered. That fee is refunded upon completion of the procedure within 60 days.
“If adoption isn’t in their plans, we invite the community to celebrate our milestone with a $70 donation,” says Jen Swanson, executive director. “All $70 gifts will be placed in HSHC’s Phoenix Fund. This is a dedicated fund used strictly for costly surgeries and treatment for critically ill or injured animals.” Donations can be made online or in person at the shelter. Donors who contribute $70 to the Phoenix Fund will be specially recognized at the end of the year.
