Quarter Auction

With the recent developments regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and the changes occurring on a daily basis, we want you to know that here at the Humane Society of Harford County, we are taking the pandemic very seriously.

To that end, unfortunately we are having to cancel/postpone all of our upcoming fundraising events. If you have already purchased ticket(s) for any events, we do plan to reschedule them, but because things are changing so rapidly, we just don’t know when. We are prepared to issue refunds should you require it, but in the meantime, please hang in there with us. We will get through this together!

Join us for a Quarter Auction to support homeless animals on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at the Riverside Community Center, 1 Church Creek Road, Belcamp!

Tickets are $5 each and each ticket includes 3 paddles. If you purchase in advance, just give your name at the door and get your paddles (to save money we aren’t issuing printed tickets).

Doors open at 6pm and the fun begins at 7pm! Bring your quarters, but we’ll also have extra rolls of quarters available for purchase. There’ll be a 50/50 raffle, a table of raffle items from each vendor, and lots of great vendors. Lite dinner fare, homemade baked goods and beverages will be available, and we’ll have Humane Society t-shirts, ball caps, and other handmade merchandise for sale.

Donations Needed
We’re looking for gift cards and other fun items with a $20 value to auction off to raise funds for the animals. Donations can be brought to the shelter during normal operating hours clearly marked “Quarter Auction” or mailed to Erin Long, HSHC, 2208 Connolly Rd, Fallston, MD 21047.

What is a Quarter Auction?
A quarter auction is part raffle and part auction. When you arrive, you’ll select 3 numbered paddles for a $5 donation to the Humane Society of Harford County. Each paddle has a corresponding numbered ping pong ball which is put into the drawing basket.

The direct sales vendors will have items up for “auction”. These items will be on display for about an hour after the doors open – you can see what will be up for auction and decide which items you’re interested in.

Once the auction begins, the announcer or one of the helpers will hold up the item that’s up for bid and will announce whether the item is a “one quarter” or “two quarter” bid. If you’re interested in bidding, you’ll put one or two quarters (whatever was announced) for EACH paddle you intend to bid with.

So, for example, if you have 2 paddles, want to bid with both to double your chances, and the item is a “one quarter” bid, you’ll put .50 in the bucket and hold your paddle(s) in the air. If you have 2 paddles and decide to only bid with one, you only pay .25 BUT you MUST choose only one numbered paddle to bid with and hold it in the air.

A volunteer will be walking from table to table with a bucket to collect bids. The announcer will then draw a number to find a winner. If they draw your number and you had bid on the item, hooray! You just won an awesome item at a great price! If they draw your number and you did NOT bid, just call out “no bid!” and they’ll continue to draw numbers until they find a winner.

There will also be various raffles and cash and carry items available through the evening – the announcer and workers will help explain how those work.
Be sure to bring quarters, but if you forget or run out, there will be rolls of quarters available for purchase at the event.

If it all sounds complicated, relax. Everything will be explained again once you get to the auction, you’ll catch on in no time and you’ll love it!
