Fallston, MD (February 13, 2018) – In preparation for kitten season – the time of year when pregnant and nursing cats and orphaned kittens flood animal shelters across the nation – the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) is throwing a Kitten Shower on Sunday, March 11, 2018 from 5-7:30PM at the shelter on 2208 Connolly Road in Fallston. The public is invited to bring an item from HSHC’s kitten wish list, sign up to become a foster parent, watch bottle feeding demonstrations, and more.

“Kitten season is really three seasons in one. It starts in spring, peaks in late spring and summer, and generally ends in the late fall,” says Jessica Simmons, HSHC’s volunteer and foster program manager. “We know from experience that a lot of help is going to be needed for the hundreds of homeless kittens that are expected to flow into the shelter.”

HSHC has a well-established foster care program that places kittens into temporary homes when they are either too young for adoption or are being treated for an illness. Having trained foster care providers and a wealth of provisions is part of HSHC’s proactive life-saving strategy.

“Last year we took in 638 kittens who were all 8 weeks old and younger,” says Cat Kelly, HSHC’s director of shelter operations. “We’re always accepting new foster applicants for this very rewarding experience, and we will need loads of canned and dry kitten food, non-clumping kitty litter, powdered kitten milk and much more.”

The complete list of most-needed items is listed here and an Amazon wish list has been established at bit.ly/HSHCKittens. Gift cards to area pet stores, Walmart, Target, etc. as well as monetary donations are also accepted. Donations can be shipped to the shelter at 2208 Connolly Road, Fallston, MD 21047 or dropped off on the following days: Monday through Friday from 11am – 6pm; Saturday from 10am – 5pm; and Sundays from noon – 4pm.
