We are extremely proud of the work we do for the animals of Harford County. Our staff is extremely dedicated to providing the best care for the animals we serve, committed to providing exceptional customer service and devoted to finding forever homes for our animals.

Mary Leavens
Executive Director
Mary has been employed at the HSHC since 6/16/2008. She owns three dogs – Jake a yellow lab, Max a black lab and Panda Bear a Newfoundland/Border Collie mix, one cat, Lacey, six birds and two horses. Two of her dogs, the cat and three birds were all adopted over the years from the Humane Society of Harford County.She has been married to her wonderful husband, Gary, for 22 years and they have two children, Tyler and Ashley. Mary’s entire family are all animal lovers and they devote much of their time to making the Humane Society of Harford County the best it can be. Mary holds a BS degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Maryland University College and an AA degree in Business Administration from Harford Community College. She has completed a number of courses toward an MBA degree through the University of Phoenix. Prior to working at the HSHC, Mary worked at Harford Community College for nearly 18 years.Her job at the HSHC is very rewarding – even though she is frequently faced with making some tough decisions regarding the animals. “Each time we adopt an animal to a loving, new home it is a major personal accomplishment for me. Any animal that we can help to live a happy, healthy life makes it incredibly rewarding. I truly feel I am where I was meant to be. It’s all about the animals! This is the first place I have ever worked where I enjoy spending my days off.”
Blaine Blaine Lang
Shelter Operations Manager
Blaine has been employed at the HSHC since 6/11/2007. He is the proud owner of two Sulcata tortoises.Blaine supervises the Animal Care, Adoptions and Tech departments. He is a true animal lover and seems to strike up a great relationship with every animal here – whether it is a dog, cat, snake, bird, hamster, rat, bunny or anything in between. He keeps the shelter operations running smoothly and the facilities in good repair. You can find Blaine just about anywhere on the property – always with a kind greeting and a smile on his face.
Kim Aumiller
Office Manager
Kim has been employed at HSHC since 11/15/2010. She has been a proud pet owner most of her life. She and her family share a love of animals and  fostered a disabled puppy which came into the shelter as a stray.  Needless to say, Lila is now a permanent member of the family.  She has been married to her husband Jeff for 16 years and they have two beautiful children. Working here at the Humane Society is a wonderful way to blend Kim’s passion for making a difference in the community and her love of animals. “The staff is absolutely wonderful and knowing what a tremendous impact we are having on the lives of these animals is a great feeling. Where else can you bring your pets to work with you, get your family involved in such a wonderful mission and leave at the end of the day knowing you’ve made a difference?”
Lauren Hurst
Tech Department Manager
Laurie has been employed at the HSHC since 9/11/2006. She has five pets: Apollo, Archie, Keno, Poppy and Munchie.  All were adopted from the HSHC (except Archie).She loves working with the animals and making them feel loved for the time they are here. She enjoys working with people and helping them find their new loved one. She is trying to make a difference in the animals’ lives. Working in the tech department is something she has wanted to do all her life. Dealing with the medical aspect gives her great joy.
Erin Long
Director of Marketing & Community Outreach
Erin has been employed at the HSHC since 11/13/2006. She owns several dogs adopted from the shelter and several cats who were found as strays near her home and became part of the family!  Erin absolutely could not imagine working anywhere else! Her dogs can’t wait to go to work in the morning with her. Plus she gets to work with and meet so many amazing people who share her love for animals. She has been married to her husband, John, for over 6 years and she is the step-mother to his 14-year-old daughter, Tamsyn. Erin holds a BA in Communications from Elizabethtown College with dual minors in Business Administration and Visual Arts. Her husband is the founder of Clean Bread & Cheese Creek, an environmental organization that cleans the stream that runs beside their home. She serves as Secretary of the Board and also volunteers to help him organize periodic clean-ups.
Kenneth Conant
Cat Care Lead – Cat Room Manager
Ken has been employed at the HSHC since 7/16/2007.He began his working career on a horse farm at the age of fifteen, worked in a number of manufacturing environments and has come full circle back to working with animals. Ken just loves working with the cats.
Ashley Fischbach
Adoptions Lead
Ashley has been employed at the HSHC since 7/16/2007. She owns one yellow Labrador Retriever named Noor.She has had the opportunity to work in the Tech Department as well as Adoptions. She takes great pride in helping the homeless animals of Harford County, rehabilitating them and helping them to find their forever homes.
Jessica Joyce
Adoptions Counselor
Jess joined the HSHC family in July of 2012.  She and her family share their home with 9 dogs: Lyra (3-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier); 8-month-old APBT sisters Vida, Vega & Big Girl; Kora (15-month-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier); Grudge (5-year-old APBT); Emmett (3-year-old APBT); Loki (4-year-old APBT); and her little witch Haze (10-year-old APBT).  Pictured at left is Envy, who sadly passed away, but who was Jess’s heart.  Jess competes with her dogs in weight pull, a “sport that showcases our dogs as a working breed and in a positive manner.”  In our Adoptions Office Jess says she enjoys “helping to rehabilitate animals in need and also laying a positive foundation for the rest of their lives.”
Gayle Lewis
Animal Care
Gayle has been employed at the HSHC since 9/15/2009. She enjoys working with the variety of animals that come into the shelter every day. You never know what type of animal will be coming through the door next.
Brittany Martin, R.V.T.
Tech Assistant
Brittany joined the staff at HSHC in March 2012. She passed her national exam and became a Registered Veterinary Technician in 2011.  She is interested in exploring canine rehab therapy and hopes to pursue that dream in the future.  Right now, she enjoys working in HSHC’s Tech department, helping animals find homes.  “You get to see a lot of different things and you begin to form bonds with the animals that come through,” she says.  “Plus, I love my co-workers; they’re a great group of people to work with!”  Brittany owns Pepper, a terrier and 2 cats adopted from HSHC: Beanjamin and Maggie!
Kaitlyn McElligott
Tech Assistant
Kaitlyn joined the HSHC family on 11/23/11.  She finds it very rewarding to work with and find homes for the many animals that come through our doors.  Kaitlyn shares her life with Foofy and Tucker, two kittens she recently adopted!  She just added Duke to her family, a 9 month old yellow lab.
Katelynne Mooney
Animal Care
Katelynne joined the Humane Society team in January 2012.  She shares her life with 2 cats named Mew and Toaster and 2 dogs named Abbey and Knight.  Katelynne enjoys being around the animals at work and says, “I love helping to find them good homes and to spoil them while they’re here!”
Cathy Owensby
Database Manager & Administrative Support
Cathy has been employed at HSHC since 8/29/11.  She is the proud pet owner of five: Taz, Niko, Bentley, Gigi and Piper.  She and her husband have been married for 25 years and have three children.  Cathy loves her new job at HSHC!  Being the animal lover that she is, she looks forward to helping the animals in any way she can.
Stephanie Rice
Dog Care Lead – Animal Care
Stephanie has been employed at the HSHC since 12/5/2008. She currently has no pets. She loves the animals and the medical side of working at the HSHC. The staff is a joy to work with and she gets satisfaction out of knowing we are placing animals with the right people in the right home. Stephanie says that it is a wonderful feeling knowing at the end of the day, I am doing good for the community and the animals in Harford County.
Victoria Rose
Foster Care & Rescue Coordinator
Vicki has been employed at the HSHC since 3/15/2010. She owns 3 dogs – a Golden Retriever named Gunner, a Lab mix adopted from HSHC named Willow, a Great Dane puppy named Quincy, 2 snakes and an Iguana names Iris.  She and her husband Dan have been married for 22 years and have three wonderful children, Olivia – 17, Emily – 15 and Vincent – 13 (all are volunteers and equally love HSHC).  HSHC is honestly the greatest place ever to work! She is so honored and proud to be a part of such a wonderful organization that she truly believes in. HSHC is full of a devoted and dedicated staff. All of the people and pets keep her smiling and wanting to come to work each and every day. We are the voices of these animals that so need our love and attention and that is why we are all here. Where else can you go to work feeling like you actually make a difference?
Maria Troutman
Animal Care
Maria joined the HSHC family on 7/27/12.  Her own pet family consists of 4 cats, 2 fish tanks, 4 snakes and 1 lizard!  Maria has volunteered at the Baltimore Zoo, and she loves playing video games and hanging out with family and friends.  Obviously Maria is an animal lover and she says she likes working at HSHC because it “feels like I’m making a difference in the lives of all the animals.”
David Truitt
Adoptions Counselor
David has been employed at the HSHC since 10/3/2003. He has four cats – Nicky (adopted from HSHC in January 2004), Hannah, Sheeba and Margie. He loves working at the HSHC because of the wonderful staff and volunteers and the many special animals who have touched his heart over the years, especially: Aphrodite, Nekka, Nicky, Tommy, Rain, Bogart, JJ and Pixie. Some of these animals are still living while others have crossed over to rainbow bridge. He has loved them all. David is also known as HSHC’s resident “feline specialist” and he tries to assist customers in answering cat related questions. He is also a pit bull advocate and tries to provide accurate information about this wonderful breed. Working at HSHC has been one of the highlights of his life. He wouldn’t trade his experience here for anything in the world.
